In this short, Dr. Ivan Bracic, DC, clinical director at Novaré Injury Care and Rehab in Fort Myers, explains why a full body stretch or traction is not the same thing as spinal decompression. He covers why decompression targets one exact level of the spine, why finding that level takes an MRI rather than a standard X-ray, and why a herniated disc calls for the right equipment.

This stretch looks like it would feel pretty good. I don't think there's anything really wrong with what Cole's doing here with this full body stretch, but one thing's worth understanding. Traction and spinal decompression, totally different things, especially when you're tractioning out your shoulders.
When it comes to spinal decompression, you're really focusing on the exact level. Of course, an MRI is necessary. You need to know exactly what level you're going after. A standard X-ray just isn't going to cut it.
After 30 years, I've noticed spinal decompression is a science, and it needs to be done with exactness.
A full body stretch like this, fantastic. But when you've got a herniated disc, you need the right equipment.
