In this short, Dr. Ivan Bracic, DC, clinical director at Novaré Injury Care and Rehab in Fort Myers, explains why protein matters for people taking a GLP-1 medication. When your appetite drops and you eat in a calorie deficit without enough protein, he says, your body can break down muscle for energy, so a lower number on the scale is not automatically a win. Ask your doctor or a dietitian how much protein is right for you.

The number one mistake on GLP-1s is not eating enough protein.
GLP-1s kill your appetite, yes, that's the point, but without adequate protein in a caloric deficit, your body breaks down muscle for energy.
And after 50, you're already losing 1% to 4% of your muscle mass annually. GLP-1s accelerate that at the worst possible time.
Minimum 100 grams of protein every day, especially when you're not hungry.
The scale going down is not automatically a win. You have to know the difference.
