In this short, Dr. Ivan Bracic, DC, clinical director at Novaré Injury Care and Rehab in Fort Myers, explains how the structures of the pelvic floor stretch to make room for a baby during pregnancy. He talks about the time after childbirth as a time to look after yourself and rebuild your strength, so you can take care of yourself, your family and your newborn. Check with your own doctor or a pelvic floor physical therapist before starting exercises after giving birth.

After childbirth, what's really happening is your body's trying to recover from carrying a baby for, let's say, nine months. Realistically, all of the structures in the pelvic floor have stretched to accommodate the size of that baby.
And after childbirth, it's time to get back to watching out for yourself, looking out for yourself, strengthening yourself, getting yourself back to your pre-pregnancy size and weight, so that your structures can really accommodate taking care of you and your family and your newborn.
