What's the Difference?
StemWave vs Shockwave Therapy.

StemWave and traditional shockwave therapy both use acoustic energy to stimulate healing. But they use different delivery methods, target tissue differently, and are marketed for different conditions. If you're researching your options, here's a straightforward comparison.

● Traditional ESWT

What Is Traditional Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)?

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy delivers high-energy radial or focused acoustic waves into injured tissue. It's been used clinically since the 1980s and is backed by decades of research, especially for tendon and soft tissue conditions.

At Novaré, we use the Intelect RPW 2 (Chattanooga Radial Pressure Wave) system. This is a radial pressure wave device used by NFL, MLB, NBA, and Olympic athletic programs.

● StemWave TRT

What Is StemWave?

StemWave TRT (Tissue Regeneration Technology) uses unfocused, low-energy electrohydraulic shockwaves that spread over a wider area. StemWave markets itself as activating stem cells in the treatment area. The device creates a broader, less concentrated wave pattern compared to focused or radial shockwave systems.

● Key Considerations

What You Should Know

Before choosing between these technologies, consider these important distinctions.

  • Research depth matters. Traditional shockwave has been studied in hundreds of clinical trials. The Cochrane Database and multiple systematic reviews support its use for plantar fasciitis and lateral epicondylitis. StemWave is newer and doesn't yet have the same depth of independent, peer-reviewed evidence.
  • FDA clearance vs FDA registration. FDA clearance (510(k)) requires demonstrating safety and effectiveness. FDA registration means the device is registered with the FDA but hasn't gone through the same review process.
  • "Stem cell activation" claims. While shockwave energy has been shown to affect cellular behavior, the clinical significance of this specific claim is still being studied. Be cautious of marketing that gets ahead of the published evidence.
