Both spinal decompression and chiropractic adjustments treat back and neck pain. But they target different problems. Adjustments correct joint alignment. Decompression treats disc problems. At Novaré Injury Care and Rehab in Fort Myers, we offer both and often combine them in the same treatment plan.
If your vertebra is out of position, an adjustment moves it back. If your disc is bulging into a nerve, decompression retracts the disc material. These are different problems requiring different tools.
A chiropractic adjustment is a controlled force applied to a spinal joint to restore proper alignment and movement. When a joint isn't moving correctly, it can compress nerves, cause muscle spasms, and create pain. At Novaré, Dr. Bracic uses x-ray imaging before adjusting. He offers both manual adjustments and instrument-assisted adjustments (Pro Adjuster SRT).
Spinal decompression uses computer-controlled traction to gently stretch the spine. This creates negative pressure inside the disc, which retracts herniated material, draws fluid back into the disc, and takes pressure off compressed nerves. We use the DRX9000 and AccuSPINA systems and require MRI before starting decompression.
Adjustments: Best for joint misalignment or restricted movement, nerve compression from vertebral position, muscle tension and spasms from poor alignment, headaches from cervical spine issues, and general spinal maintenance.
Decompression: Best for herniated or bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, sciatica from disc compression, spinal stenosis, and failed back surgery syndrome.
Controlled force applied to a spinal joint restores proper alignment and movement. Quick sessions, 5-15 minutes. X-ray recommended before treatment.
Computer-controlled traction creates negative intradiscal pressure. Retracts herniated material, draws nutrients in, relieves nerve compression. 30-45 minute sessions.
X-rays show the alignment. MRI shows the discs. Together, they tell the full story and determine which treatment you need. Dr. Bracic reads every scan himself.
Many patients receive both. Decompression addresses the disc herniation while adjustments correct the alignment changes that contributed to the disc problem. Combined with laser therapy and manual therapy for a multi-treatment approach.
How chiropractic adjustments and spinal decompression compare on the factors that matter most.
| Factor | Chiropractic Adjustment | Spinal Decompression |
|---|---|---|
| What it treats | Joint alignment, nerve compression from position | Disc herniation, bulging, degeneration |
| Mechanism | Quick, controlled force to a joint | Computer-controlled traction cycling |
| Session time | 5-15 minutes | 30-45 minutes |
| Number of sessions | Varies, often fewer for acute issues | 20-30 sessions over 6-8 weeks |
| Imaging needed | X-ray recommended | MRI required |
| Cost | Usually insurance-covered | Often self-pay |
| Best for | Alignment issues, joint stiffness | Disc problems, sciatica |
Adjustments are the right choice when your pain comes from a joint problem, not a disc problem.
Decompression is the right choice when your pain is disc-related. If adjustments help temporarily but pain keeps returning, the disc may be the root cause.
